Flores!

I cleaned, purged and organized a lot of art supplies recently, which meant digging elbow deep into my fake flower stash. I have a bit of a hoarding problem with faux blooms: I buy bushels in thrift stores. I tend to fall in love with the colors, and they are so cheap! Plus, I feel so much better “recycling” them in crafts and decor. So…green.

Wildflower crowns were a staple in my Etsy shop last spring, and have been a huge trend for a while now. Though the boho vibe is always fun to invoke, I love the burst of color they bring to an outfit even more.

Inspired by Frida Kahlo’s fresh flower do’s and the gorgeous haku lei’s Free People used in their May 2011 catalog, I wanted to construct a tropical version of this accessory to take with me on my island vacation. This time I went less structured, more natural and fuller in greenery. I wanted them to feel handmade on a whim, with mixed blooms and asymmetrical configurations.

Still, I do not know if a girl needs upwards of six flower crowns, so I may have a limited run of treats soon for sale. Also, poor Evangeline looks like she needs a good makeover, so mannequin maintenance may be next on the DIY agenda.

Spring always finds me obsessed with flowers.
It is a dream of mine to reach a level of income where I can have fresh flowers in the house all the time…without feeling guilty. They are a luxury purchase right now, but oh how they feel like a necessity!
My apartment overlooks a downtown community garden and the roses are in bloom. This time of year when the wind blows you can smell their sweet scent in the kitchen. It is one of my favorite things about my home: the scent of roses wafting in the windows on a sunny afternoon.
The pictures above are some bits from my apartment, which I am in the process of redecorating (on top of everything else I’m trying to be better at). My favorite, simple changes were painting the back of the bookcase pink, and hanging my favorite dress on display. These things make me happy.

Pretty little messes.
I’m cleaning up tinsel and stray shoes, playing with one of my most coveted gifts, and feeling generally lovely. I do love bright and quiet afternoons.

Mad about Green

I’m head over heels for emerald tones and kelly greens! All of my holiday dresses are in the shade this year. I went with a Marilyn-inspired look to a holiday party yesterday, pairing the dress on the left with pops of bright pink. I loved it so much I’m debating wearing it again tonight with a sixties updo…But the shiny, poufy number was earmarked for the evening.

In the end it always comes down to one question: Are you a Betty or a Joan?

Today’s outfit brought to you by a supposed preference of gentlemen, beauty marks, the “nifty” decade, and One Eyed Jack’s. I’m loving everything fifties and polka-dotted right now!

Before it Was Sewn: Bri’s Art Show at RGB
I am so very proud of Briana! I am lucky to be surrounded by genuinely talented, passionate, and beautiful people–of which she is a favorite. Her group show was fun (I always enjoy art, pear cider and fashion) and I was so glad to be in attendance. Now I just have to get my commissions in before she gets famous and expensive…
