Pattern on Pattern: Happy Birthday Baby Sis!

My little sister (and favorite partner in crime) is turning 22 today. It feels like just yesterday she was only seven, running around with golden curls and watersocks as shoes.

Jaz likes anything ethnic-inspired and bright, so these are her presents wrapped in patterned art papers from India, and tied up in recycled sari rope. More is more today.

Fall into Jaz’s world of color and film here.

Flores!

I cleaned, purged and organized a lot of art supplies recently, which meant digging elbow deep into my fake flower stash. I have a bit of a hoarding problem with faux blooms: I buy bushels in thrift stores. I tend to fall in love with the colors, and they are so cheap! Plus, I feel so much better “recycling” them in crafts and decor. So…green.

Wildflower crowns were a staple in my Etsy shop last spring, and have been a huge trend for a while now. Though the boho vibe is always fun to invoke, I love the burst of color they bring to an outfit even more.

Inspired by Frida Kahlo’s fresh flower do’s and the gorgeous haku lei’s Free People used in their May 2011 catalog, I wanted to construct a tropical version of this accessory to take with me on my island vacation. This time I went less structured, more natural and fuller in greenery. I wanted them to feel handmade on a whim, with mixed blooms and asymmetrical configurations.

Still, I do not know if a girl needs upwards of six flower crowns, so I may have a limited run of treats soon for sale. Also, poor Evangeline looks like she needs a good makeover, so mannequin maintenance may be next on the DIY agenda.

Fluo, stripes and dots, oh my!
I got a little wrap crazy this year, but it was so much fun. Ostrich feathers, jingle bells, neon candy canes, sparkle fringe, branches…you name it and it snuck in. I am having an affair with printed washi tape right now. Hope your christmas was merry and bright!

Wrapping: Ideas and Inspirations
It could be that I have too many ideas…but distilling into graphic prints and fluorescents might be my favorite. And, of course, a little sparkle never hurt anybody.

Gifts of Christmas Past
Last year’s presents were bright and fun. I’m trying to come up with a new scheme this year…but my packaging mind is all over the place! Usually the supplies have been gathered and the plan is ready by now. I’ve done purple and python print, hot pink and leopard, gold and houndstooth, kraft paper tied with buttons and pom poms…what next?

Crafty Sunday
It’s been pretty crafty around here. Today I bleached some bottle brush trees for dying, made headway on my little village, prepped some surprise packages, and did a little Etsy shopping. I’ll be sharing projects as I finish them up over the next few weeks!
