Flores!

I cleaned, purged and organized a lot of art supplies recently, which meant digging elbow deep into my fake flower stash. I have a bit of a hoarding problem with faux blooms: I buy bushels in thrift stores. I tend to fall in love with the colors, and they are so cheap! Plus, I feel so much better “recycling” them in crafts and decor. So…green.

Wildflower crowns were a staple in my Etsy shop last spring, and have been a huge trend for a while now. Though the boho vibe is always fun to invoke, I love the burst of color they bring to an outfit even more.

Inspired by Frida Kahlo’s fresh flower do’s and the gorgeous haku lei’s Free People used in their May 2011 catalog, I wanted to construct a tropical version of this accessory to take with me on my island vacation. This time I went less structured, more natural and fuller in greenery. I wanted them to feel handmade on a whim, with mixed blooms and asymmetrical configurations.

Still, I do not know if a girl needs upwards of six flower crowns, so I may have a limited run of treats soon for sale. Also, poor Evangeline looks like she needs a good makeover, so mannequin maintenance may be next on the DIY agenda.

Fluo, stripes and dots, oh my!
I got a little wrap crazy this year, but it was so much fun. Ostrich feathers, jingle bells, neon candy canes, sparkle fringe, branches…you name it and it snuck in. I am having an affair with printed washi tape right now. Hope your christmas was merry and bright!

Crafty Sunday
It’s been pretty crafty around here. Today I bleached some bottle brush trees for dying, made headway on my little village, prepped some surprise packages, and did a little Etsy shopping. I’ll be sharing projects as I finish them up over the next few weeks!

GPOY: Just finished my absolute favorite part.

Fingernail gloves Inspired by 1930’s surrealist couturier Elsa Schiaparelli, and Glenn Close’s Cruella.

Also: hand-painted papier mache log! This took so much longer than I thought it would. Lots of drying stages. My log will have something to say about this.

And, yes, I am a giant GIANT nerd. Haters gonna hate.

Made a little paper pumpkin garland this afternoon.

Changing my home screen was the best decision I made today.

This is the birthday card I made Jordan. Yes, Beyonce is screaming rainbows. Yes, she also has rhinestone eyes. Yes, the Miu Miu heels have real craft glitter on them. Glitter all the things!

Spring has sprung! The Floral Collection is finally for sale!
I just finished listing everything in my Etsy shop, so feel free to transform yourself into a nymph and grab a bunch of handmade clips and flower crowns for spring! Most are made from vintage flowers I carefully collected over the last few months, and finishing this project with my nutso schedule has been a labor of love and time and glitter-magic. Pretty much all of the money made from the shop funds collaborations and photoshoots with my sister, so it’s kind of like you’re helping the Joneses keep up with themselves!
As always, you can check out more pictures on flickr.

What my desk looks like right now. Tons of accessory supplies and my new disco ball. That disco ball is my thrifting holy grail: I’ve wanted one this exact size for about 5 years. When I saw it I screamed. IT WAS UNDER 5 DOLLARS PEOPLE. Dreams do come true.
